We just completed a large mold remediation job for a local jewelry store in Langhorne, PA. The mold grew because water damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee wasn’t dried properly. Even though the carpets were dry, the drywall behind vinyl wallpaper was allowed to stay wet.

We’ve seen so many people in the last 3 weeks affected with flooding in the wake of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee with 26 inches of rain fall in less than a month. Over and over we’ve heard the words “this has never happened before.” And folks are left with a lot of worry along with the water that flooded their homes and businesses.

We received some very sad news this past week.
PuroClean Emergency Recovery Services was called several weeks ago by a relative living in another state to assist his aging aunt with hoarding clean up services. This was a different kind of hoarding clean up than what is normally seen on the television shows (e.g., Hoarding: Buried Alive http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/hoarding-buried-alive and A&E’s Hoarding http://www.aetv.com/hoarders/ )

This blog by Ali S. Kahn at the CDC got my attention . . . there's nothing better than humor to engage us with information we need to prepare. It's a great list of things we should all be doing in case the worst should happen. I've added a few of my own notes (in italics)
Water (1 gallon per person per day) A little more if you want to wash and prevent yourself from smelling like a zombie!

April Showers may bring May Flowers – but this is the time of year when water is most likely to seep into your basement too. Homeowners depend on sump pumps to keep their basements and homes dry. Unfortunately, rain storms and power outages also go together. If you have an electric sump pump with no back up system, your sump pump may fail just when you need it most.

April Showers bring May flowers . . . and mold in homes affected by recent flooding.
Did you know that mold starts to grow in as little as 72 hours after a flood?
