Taking the 'Severe' Out of Severe Weather

Culpeper, VA: When thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe weather storms have entered your community, there is little time for you to find ways to prevent your property from being damaged. • Have a professional check the structural integrity of your roof to see if it can sustain heavy weight from the accumulation of water, in case the drains do not work.
• Have check valves installed in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up through the drains into your home.
• Construct barriers, such as levees, berms, or floodwalls, to stop floodwater from entering your home.
• Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to avoid seepage.
• Think about installing permanent storm shutters so that your windows can be protected from storm damage.
• Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts, and be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
• Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe storm.
