Taking the 'Severe' Out of Severe Weather
PuroClean helps people prepare their homes for heavy rains, winds and other severe weather this season
Culpeper, VA: When thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe weather storms have entered your community, there is little time for you to find ways to prevent your property from being damaged. However, if you are prepared ahead of time, there are several precautions you can take to make sure that when a storm does hit, both you and your home are protected.
Jim McNemar, Owner/President for PuroClean Emergency Restoration, offers some advice for people on how to prepare for dangerous weather before it hits.
"Weather is tricky – it can cause little harm or it can cause extreme harm. As experts in property damage, mitigation, and restoration services, we feel that it's never too early to prepare for what could potentially be severe weather," McNemar said, suggesting the following helpful tips for people to protect themselves and their homes from severe weather damage:
- Have a professional check the structural integrity of your roof to see if it can sustain heavy weight from the accumulation of water, in case the drains do not work.
- Have check valves installed in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up through the drains into your home.
- Construct barriers, such as levees, berms, or floodwalls, to stop floodwater from entering your home.
- Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to avoid seepage.
- Think about installing permanent storm shutters so that your windows can be protected from storm damage.
- Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts, and be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
- Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe storm.
