U.S. & Chinese Drywall May be Causing Indoor Air Quality Problems
The experts at Air Matters LLC www.AirMattersMoldTesting.com provide inspection and testing services in the Triangle to identify defective drywall.
In October it was reported in the Insurance Journal that up to 300 homes in several states that were constructed with faulty drywall from China will be remediated. According to the report, “Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against homebuilders, developers, installers, realtors, brokers, suppliers, importers, exporters, distributors and manufacturers over drywall from China, which was widely imported into the United States between 2004 and 2006.”
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), along with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), released a statement in April that recommended removing problem drywall from homes. According to the document, “Based on scientific study of the problem to date, HUD and CPSC recommend consumers remove all possible problem drywall from their homes, and replace electrical components and wiring, gas service piping, fire suppression sprinkler systems, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Taking these steps should help eliminate both the source of the problem drywall and corrosion-damaged components that might cause a safety problem in the home.”
Just last week a report in USA Today brought to light potential similar problems with drywall manufactured in the United States. According to the article almost 100 property owners have already joined a lawsuit against U.S. drywall manufacturers for similar problems.
“Cases of problematic drywall releasing corrosive gases have been occurring across the country,” reported Kevin Oakley, PuroClean Property Rescuers NC “Not only does it appear to corrode metal objects in buildings, but people are claiming headaches caused by indoor air quality problems that are damaging their health. The only way to know for sure if defective drywall is a problem in a structure is to test the drywall materials and IAQ.” Our colleagues at Air Matters LLC are a great source of information on this subject
