Second, always be vigilant about prioritizing active pool supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"creating-a-safe-pool-environment\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thekriegers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/poolsafety-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>Creating a safe pool environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pool fence<\/strong>: Your pool should have a four-foot fence with a self-closing gate and latch those locks. The fence should have four sides, meaning the house cannot be one of the sides. (Meaning someone could walk out of the house and be in the pool area.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remove all toys and floatation devices<\/strong>&nbsp;from the pool when not in use. Floatation devices can block your view of the water, and children reaching for toys and floats can fall into the pool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maintain proper signage<\/strong>&nbsp;such as \u201cNo diving.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Establish and maintain pool rules<\/strong>, including what will happen if rules are broken.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consider an alarm<\/strong>&nbsp;on exterior doors and gates that lead to the pool, and surface water alarm on the pool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep rescue equipment<\/strong> near the pool at all times.<a href=\"http:\/\/thekriegers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/poolsafety-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prioritizing-pool-supervision\"><strong>Prioritizing pool supervision<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supervision seems like a no-brainer, but&nbsp;<em>did you know that 88% of child drownings occur with an adult present?<\/em> We get used to passive supervision when kids are playing in the yard or inside. The pool is different. The pool requires&nbsp;<em>active supervision.&nbsp;<\/em>In the pool emergencies happen quickly and there\u2019s no margin for error. Here are some active supervision rules one should put in place at their pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No one should ever swim alone.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leave your phone inside.<\/strong>&nbsp;This is perhaps the most critical, easiest thing you can do. We\u2019re all sucked into our screens without realizing it, so just remove the temptation by leaving your phone inside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember,&nbsp;<strong>when a child falls in the water&nbsp;it is silent<\/strong>. Don\u2019t assume you\u2019ll hear a splash or commotion. Instead, assume that everyone is distracted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An undistracted adult should watch the pool at all times<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 someone who isn\u2019t chatting, eating, or refilling the snack bowl. During gatherings, we have adults take turns sitting away from the other adults to watch the pool without distractions. When possible, we have a lifeguard for large events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Read pool rules aloud<\/strong>, not all kids are familiar with rules. Make sure kids and parents know that unsafe behavior will not be tolerated and define what \u201cunsafe behavior\u201d means if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Never allow kids to remove life preservers while in the pool enclosure.<\/strong>&nbsp;This is especially important during large gatherings. Kids often take off their preservers to eat or to dry off, then wander back to the pool.
