Let’s face it; sometimes emergencies come up. Natural disasters or other unexpected emergencies can require you have to leave your home for days at a time. If a disaster or emergency occurs and you have to evacuate your home, it is vital to have a bag for everyone in the household. Check bags every six months to switch out food and water, update essential documents, and make sure clothing items still fit. Here’s how to pack a bag that will make sure you’re prepared for almost anything.
Choosing the Right Bag
You want your bag to be sturdy but lightweight for someone to carry quickly and large enough to hold three days’ worth of items. Backpacks are typically the best type of bag because you can have them and be hand-free. Small suitcases or rolling bags can also work well, but it is essential to remember that there is a possibility that you could be running with your bag.
Medications
Pack three days’ worth of daily medications, first aid materials, hand sanitizers, and sanitizing wipes. Include an extra pair of glasses or contacts, a travel toothbrush & toothpaste, a comfort item for each child, and small items that you and your family can use for entertainment.
Electronics
Make sure your bag contains an LED flashlight as well as extra chargers and batter picks. It isn’t guaranteed that you will have electricity where you end up; however, these places can be great for charging up. Invest in a portable radio that a crank can power.
Documentation
Place all documents in a waterproof bag in your emergency bag. You must have paper copies of records in the instance that you cannot use a flash drive. Here are some examples of documents you should have on your person:
- Social security card
- Birth certificate
- Health insurance cards
- Driver’s license
- List of emergency contact information
Pets
Don’t forget about your pets! Your pets should have an emergency bag that includes a leash, dry food, and water.
