Klondike&#8217;s other defining neighbor is Richard Bong State Recreation Area, whose eastern edge the community borders directly. That 4,515-acre expanse of prairie, savanna, and wetland was originally slated to become a Cold War-era jet fighter interceptor base \u2014 construction stopped just three days before the runway&#8217;s concrete was scheduled to be poured \u2014 before local citizens fought to preserve the land, which the state ultimately opened as a recreation area in 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That neighboring landscape of glacially carved wetlands and open prairie shapes Klondike&#8217;s water damage risk directly. Because so much of Klondike and Brighton Township remains agricultural and rural, a significant share of homes rely on private wells and septic systems rather than municipal utilities, and septic fields in already-saturated, poorly draining ground are more prone to backing up during heavy rain or spring snowmelt than systems in better-drained terrain elsewhere in our service area. That combination of high water table and septic dependency is a recurring driver of Category 3 sewage-related losses in this part of Kenosha County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klondike&#8217;s mix of older farmhouses and newer rural residential construction adds another layer.
