A typical plan of action for fire restoration includes the following:

1. Maintain air quality

An air scrubber helps with the quality of air in the building.

2. Treat contents of the structure

Depending on the severity of the fire damage, the contents of the building will be treated in one of the following ways:

• Cleaned on site
• Inventoried and discarded
• Inventoried and packed on site, then moved to our climate controlled warehouse for cleaning. The items can be stored until the premises is ready for the contents to be returned. 

3. Look for other damage

Most fires also have water damage or even mold since water was used to put out the fire.  The water damaged, soot filled areas must be removed in order to dry the structure in order to prevent further damage. 

4. Assess how much equipment is needed

Air movers and dehumidifiers are usually needed in order to dry the structure. 

5. Discard the unsalvageable materials

“How do I remove smoke damage odor in wood?”

Wood that does not have a protective layer like polyurethane or a clear coat finish often takes on smoke odor that is hard to remove. Most furniture has a protective layer only on the sides that people see, like the top of the table, but the underside does not have a finish on it.  The pores of the wood open up with the heat and then close as it cools, trapping the smoke odor within the wood itself. At PuroClean Restoration Services, we clean the wood and then use an ozone machine to try to get rid of any remaining odors.  If necessary, we use an encapsulant to seal in any remaining smoke odors.
