Toilet and sewer pipe backups can result in sewage entering your basement or other portions of your home or company. This dark, thick water is very hazardous and contains quite a lot of dangerous contaminants. These contaminants consist of pathogens, bacteria and viruses and cause health risks and illness dangers if people or animals experience exposure. Finding a remedy to these problems ASAP is imperative, as is removing sewage from your premises. Having information of what may cause sewer backups may help you prevent a hazardous condition in your home or basement. Please see this list of things that may help prevent sewage backups that may occur in your home or business:

Why Sewage Backup Occurs

  • Clogged Drain Pipes – Sewage backs up into your home or business when your drain lines or main sewer lines become occluded. For example: if one toilet starts a sewage backup, the attached drain and/or many toilets and the main sewer may become caught up in the problem.
  • Imposing Tree Roots – Trees with large strong imposing roots have the ability to grow through and around pipes, even crushing sewer pipes. Tree roots have the capability to extend out to a long distance and damage your pipes, causing a sewer backup. Keep an eye out for roots near your main sewer lines or septic tank area to guard from damage.
  • Aging & Damaged Sewer Lines – Older sewer lines, pipes, drains and septic systems will fail by slowly weakening and crumbling over time – leading to sewage backups, water filled homes, and basements full of sewage. Keep in mind the age of your home and surrounding area and keep an eye out for these potential problems.
  • Heavy Rainfall Amounts – Large amounts of rain can overcome your main storm and sewer lines. If it turns out that your public system can’t handle large rainfall levels, the flooding can work its way into the sewer lines connected to the mainline, and set your home or business in a potentially dangerous possibility of sewer backup. There is a risk of serious health issues when in and around rising waters in your region that occurs from flooding in rivers and streams, hurricanes, and other associated weather, when water combines with sewage, contaminants and chemicals. When wading in this waste use extreme caution, and also when the water recedes and starts drying. Organic substance that is dried out can then turn aerosolized and present a threat of breathing in these contaminants. Be positive to use proper PPE to guard against these dangerous risks.
