Performing maintenance tasks in the spring is important for keeping our homes safe and comfortable throughout the year. Here\u2019s a list of essential tasks that focus on your home\u2019s exterior:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>1.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Check Gutters and Downspouts <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Remove any debris, such as leaves or branches, from the gutters.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">If you notice gunk in your downspouts, clean it by shoving a garden hose into the downspouts and have someone (on the ground) to turn on the water.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">If you have asphalt roofing, check the gutter deposit for loose particles that might have fallen off.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are not loose; tighten any loose gutter straps and spout extensions.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Consider installing spout screens or gutter cap systems to keep debris at bay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Inspect Your Roof <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">If you choose to go on the roof, ensure your safety by using a sturdy ladder and a safety harness. Don\u2019t forget to wear proper shoes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Check for loose, damaged or missing shingles, as well as rusted or pitted flashing.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Examine the caulk around skylights and pipe collars.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">If your roof needs repairing, it\u2019s much safer to hire a professional contractor to do the job.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Inspect the chimney for damage and hire a chimney sweep to clean the flue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>3.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Examine the Exterior Paint<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Check for peeling paint and for surfaces where paint has fallen off.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Scrape off any chipped paint and pressure wash the exterior walls.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Repaint these surfaces to protect the wood from rotting and from water damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>4.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Trim Shrubs and Trees<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Prune loose branches from trees near your home to avoid structural damage during a storm and to prevent water and critters from reaching your house.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Keep branches at least 5 feet away from your home.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Before trimming overgrowth, clean the cutting blades with bleach and a rag.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>5.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Improve Drainage Around Your Home\u2019s Foundation <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Make sure water does not pool against your home\u2019s foundation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The soil should slope away from the foundation walls at least 6 inches over 10 feet.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">To create a slope, remove the mulch and debris from the soil first. Then, move the soil and put back the mulch and debris on top of the soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>6. Check the concrete walkways and driveways<\/strong> in your yard.
