When a sewer line is blocked, the sewage that is thick and dark can be dangerous to your health. This sewer waste is extremely unsanitary, containing contaminants like bacteria, viruses and pathogens. All of these dangerous germs can pose a serious health risk and cause many illnesses if humans or animals suffer exposure. If it happens that you suffer a sewage backup on the premises of your home or business, or a toilet backup in either location, repairing either one is of the highest priority. Having this dirty sewer waste in your home is dangerous and should be removed as soon as possible. Furthermore, knowing what is causing the sewer backups may aid in preventing this potentially hazardous situation. To help you in managing sewage backups in your home or business, following is a list of things that may help:
PuroClean’s process for cleaning and restoration of Category 3 water, aka sewer and contaminated water backup clean up following the IICRC industry standards, is as follows:
1. Ensuring safety for all personnel and occupants by placing strict rules on site access to remediation personnel only in order to prevent health related occurrences.
2. Valuation of the jobsite along with health and safety surveys.
3. Ensure all remediation personnel are equipped with the proper personal protection equipment (PPE). This may include but is not limited to:
4. Engineering controls put in place and condemnatory barriers used (if needed) preventing cross-contamination.
5. Stopping all potential dangers and safety risks if possible.
6. Disposal, removal of bulk water, soil, and contaminates.
7. Remove and dispose of all contaminated porous and semi-porous materials that are not able to be restored, which could include but is not limited to:
8. Implement cleaning methods and use of EPA registered biocides and antimicrobials
9. Actual cleansing of all remaining structures
10. We suggest using a third-party Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to perform clearance testing to ensure the building is returned to a safe pre-loss condition for health and safety.
11. All materials damaged by water to be dried and returned to pre-loss condition
12. After completion of remediation – Cleaning of all equipment used
13. All demo materials removed from the building
