February Focus 2021 – Bringing out the great in our community! Thank you, Tom Roylston with Tom Roylston State Farm for nominating Kayla Barbare to be our Great in Greer for February.
KAYLA BARBARE – GREER HIGH SCHOOL PE TEACHER/COACH
From the heart of Kayla –
Stepping into creativity for the kids!
Coach Landreth and I (Kayla) were challenged to think outside of the box while planning the curriculum for our Team Sports class, due to the various COVID-19 restrictions that are placed on Physical Education. We also had to consider that our students could not be placed through our normal weightlifting and speed/agility program, which is provided for them each year, due to students not having access to proper workout equipment as a result of them not being in the physical school building each day. Our school is currently on a modified in-person schedule where students come to school four days a week and then have a chosen eLearning day based on their colored group.
Bike drive purpose:
Our students will be given the opportunity to participate in a fun and safe outdoor adventure while working to improve their cardiovascular endurance as well as increase their endorphin production. Students will learn about biking safety protocols, how to maintain and upkeep mountain bikes, goal setting, progress monitoring, and about the physical and emotional benefits that mountain biking can produce. We also will educate our students on the free or low-cost biking courses that are available to them around the surrounding community such as Greer City, The Swamp Rabbit Trail, Paris Mountain State Park, Lake Conestee Nature Preserve, etc.
The objective:
We are looking forward to providing our students with a unique learning experience that they may not typically get within other Physical Education Programs. We also want to teach them lifelong skills that they can utilize to maintain a healthy lifestyle and so that they can go out and teach others about these activities as well. We hope to create a chain reaction where students take what they have learned in our classrooms and not only apply it to their own personal lives but to also share their new knowledge with others in their own community. Every year we try to add a new fun unit to our Physical Education Program so that our curriculum evolves and stays up to date with the current interest/trends of our students and the surrounding community.
Mountain Bike Drive for Greer High School!
We launched our Bike Drive and are eager to receive continued donations so that we can provide a new Mountain Bike Unit for our students. We have received various donations such as mountain bikes, helmets, and monetary donations.
Be a part today!
We are still in need of mountain bikes, mountain bike helmets, and mountain bike repair tools/accessories. We need approximately 20 bikes or more so that we can accommodate all of our students in Team Sports this year but are still looking for more donations so that we can expand it to our PE 1 classes in the future. Let’s spread the word to our local community!
Still bringing the difference!
At this time we do not have a deadline or endpoint as we are still in need of equipment. We will gladly accept all donations until we receive enough equipment to accommodate all of our students.
Students participating:
Currently, our plan is to test out this new unit with our Team Sports class and then to expand it to all of our Physical Education classes. We want to offer this learning experience to all of our students who come through our Physical Education Program which annually would impact over 400 students but we are limited to the amount of equipment that we have so we are hoping to continue to receive monetary donations, Mountain Bikes, Mountain Bike helmets, and Mountain Bike repair parts/tools/accessories. Contact Kayla Barbare at [email protected] to contribute mountain bikes and more!
Thanks – shout out!
Kayla would like to thank everyone who has already donated to our Greer High School Bike Drive and who have already helped us spread the word! We could not be able to do what we do without the amazing support that we receive from our local Greer community!
