PuroClean of The Big Island was very excited about the PuroClean Cares®: Adopt A Classroom Campaign and immediately started researching potential partners in the community to start working with on Hawai’i Island. However, once we started, we learned that there are at least six other local organizations that host school supply drives on our island. We really wanted to make an impact on a school, so we decided that instead of adopting a school, we would adopt a school’s athletics team.

We partnered with St. Joseph School in Hilo, Hawaii. This is a 156-year-old educational institution that is academically rigorous but places significant value on teaching its students to stay true to their moral compasses and make positive impacts in the lives of others around them. In 2020 this school faced permanent closure, but when the news made its way around our little town, the entire community rallied and raised enough money to keep it open. A ten-year-old student donated her $25 prize money from an essay contest to keep her school open. An 81-year-old man who graduated from a rival high school wrote a check for $100 in memory of his best friend who was a graduate of St. Joseph School. Businesses and other community leaders made very large donations and the school remains open today.

We decided to pick an athletic team that wasn’t as popular as basketball or volleyball and adopted their air rifle team. This team is made up of five young women who practiced four days a week through the entire summer to strengthen their shooting skills. We saw that their gear bags were second-hand and very tattered so we purchased new bags and our owner/operator, Gregory Arianoff, designed a team logo and then had embroidered patches sewn onto the bags.

These new team bags were revealed at the parent meeting on August 6th in the school gym. The athletes were thrilled, but it seemed the adults were even more excited by the new swag for the team.

After the meeting, everyone stayed to have some dinner and socialize. During dinner, their head coach commented that this team would be the first to ever show up at air riflery matches with team bags. Looks like PuroClean of the Big Island and St. Joseph School may start a new trend in the sport of air riflery in Hawaii!
