Preventing Property Damage

VIDEO: Storm Season Tips to Prevent Flooding

Water Restoration

What’s the first thing you should do when you notice the basement flooding? Steve Scott of PuroClean of Howell recently shared some great tips with WLAJ-TV to keep our homes damage-free during storms season:

Video Transcript:

JULIE HOLTON: Property damage can be traumatic  — and expensive. I’m with Steve Scott of PuroClean. Steve, what can homeowners do to prepare before disaster hits?

STEVE SCOTT: Flooding is something we see that causes a lot of damage. When it comes to water getting into your house, it often comes from a sump pump backing up or failing.

Sump pump alarms are easy to install and cheap to purchase —  if you want to make that extra investment — you can find them for under 20-bucks at the hardware store. Or, you can spend a little more and get a battery backup for your sump pump.

JULIE HOLTON: How do I test the sump pump?

STEVE SCOTT: It only takes about five minutes to test it. pour about five gallons of water into the pump pit — slowly until you see the float rise. At this point, the pump should kick on. If you can’t pour water into the sump pump, lift the float with your hand and check that it turns on — just don’t run it for more than a few seconds to prevent damage to the motor.
