I\u2019m with Steve Scott of PuroClean. Steve, what can homeowners do to prepare <b><i>before<\/i><\/b> disaster hits?<\/p>\n<p><b>STEVE SCOTT:\u00a0<\/b>Flooding is something we see that causes a lot of damage. When it comes to water getting into your house, it often comes from a sump pump backing up or failing.<\/p>\n<p>Sump pump alarms are easy to install and cheap to purchase \u2014\u00a0 if you want to make that extra investment \u2014 you can find them for under 20-bucks at the hardware store. Or, you can spend a little more and get a battery backup for your sump pump.<\/p>\n<p><b>JULIE HOLTON:\u00a0<\/b>How do I test the sump pump?<\/p>\n<p><b>STEVE SCOTT:\u00a0<\/b>It only takes about five minutes to test it. pour about five gallons of water into the pump pit \u2014 slowly until you see the float rise. At this point, the pump should kick on.
