Fires are one of the most common disasters in the country. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), there were 499,000 structure fires in the U.S. in 2018, resulting in 3,665 civilian deaths, 15,200 injuries, and $11.1 billion in property damage.
Take personal responsibility and prepare long before a fire threatens your home and family. Suffolk and Nassau counties experience a mix of residential, coastal, and urban fire risks, making fire preparedness essential.
Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors outside of every sleep area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
- Interconnect all smoke alarms so that when one sounds, they all do.
- Test alarms monthly by pushing the test button.
- Change batteries twice a year (during Daylight Saving Time).
- Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years or sooner if they don’t respond properly.
- Ensure everyone in the home recognizes the smoke alarm sound and knows what to do.
Fire Extinguishers
- Place fire extinguishers on every level of the home and close to exits.
- Ensure everyone knows how to use them (PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
- Choose a multi-purpose fire extinguisher labeled by an independent testing lab.
- Use fire extinguishers only for small, confined fires—evacuate for large fires.
Fire Escape Plan
- Create a fire escape plan with two exits per room.
- Designate a safe meeting spot outside the home.
- Ensure all family members know how to contact each other in an emergency.
- Teach the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” technique in case clothing catches fire.
- Practice the plan regularly.
Kitchen Safety
- Never leave the stove or oven unattended while cooking.
- Stay alert—avoid distractions and never cook under the influence.
- Wear tight-fitting or short sleeves while cooking.
- Keep flammable objects away from the stove.
- Remove stove knobs when not in use to prevent pets or children from accidentally turning them on.
Smoking Safety
- Smoke outside and use fire-safe cigarettes.
- Never smoke in bed or when feeling drowsy.
- Use large ashtrays and ensure cigarettes are completely extinguished before disposal.
- Avoid discarding cigarettes in planters or dry vegetation.
Candle Safety
- Never leave candles unattended.
- Use sturdy holders and place candles on heat-resistant surfaces.
- Keep candles at least three inches apart to prevent melting.
- Avoid candles during power outages—use battery-operated lights instead.
Children & Fire Safety
- Keep matches and lighters locked away.
- Never use lighters in front of children to prevent imitation.
- Check under beds and in closets for signs of fire play.
- Teach kids to stay away from space heaters and fireplaces.
Fireplaces
- Have chimneys inspected and cleaned annually by a professional.
- Use only dry, seasoned wood for burning.
- Keep flammable objects at least two feet away.
- Install a mesh metal or fire screen to contain embers.
Space Heaters
- Always supervise space heaters and unplug them when not in use.
- Place heaters on a stable, non-flammable surface.
- Check cords, plugs, and outlets regularly for overheating.
Electrical Safety
- Have your home’s electrical system inspected regularly.
- Replace frayed wires and avoid running cords under rugs.
- Don’t overload extension cords or power strips.
- Install circuit breakers (GFCIs and AFCIs) to prevent electrical fires.
Garage & Storage Safety
- Store gasoline and other flammables in approved containers.
- Keep these containers outside the home, preferably in a detached garage or shed.
- Clean up spills with absorbent materials like cat litter and dispose of them properly.
- Avoid storing old mattresses in the garage or attic, as they can be a fire hazard.
