The long, fun-filled days are a welcome break from the routine and demands of school. Instead of lessons and recess, kids can enjoy swimming, outdoor activities, picnics, and family vacations. But the lazy days of summer also expose children to increased physical risks. Drowning, heat exhaustion, and dehydration are just a few of the dangers they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some safety tips to help keep your kids safe at home, while away at camp, or on the road with the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excessive Heat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Heat cramps and heat exhaustion can be signs of heat stroke, which can be life-threatening for children. Don\u2019t let your child become overheated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enjoy outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear clothing that is lightweight and loose-fitting. Moisture-wicking fabric is a bonus!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for shade from trees, a beach umbrella, or man-made structures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take frequent water and rest breaks. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrens.com\/health-wellness\/heat-stroke-symptoms-in-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">symptoms of overheating<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sun Protection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics provides advice on how to avoid excessive sun exposure and sunburn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) 30.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear a hat with a 3-inch brim to protect the face, ears, and back of the neck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider purchasing sun-protective clothing with a high UPF (ultraviolet protection factor).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.puroclean.com\/lanham-md-puroclean-restoration-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/149\/2023\/07\/AdobeStock_432173810-1024x663.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19137\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Applying sunscreen is an important part of protecting our children from<\/em> <em>the sun&#8217;s harsh rays.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether your kids are swimming in your backyard pool or enjoying the community pool, water safety is a top priority. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. between ages 1 and 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Actively supervise children when they are in or around water. Designate a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safekids.org\/other-resource\/water-watcher-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Water Watcher<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enroll your child in a local swim class and regularly assess their skill level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/kids\/safety\/other-safety-issues\/choosing-life-jackets-for-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device<\/a> for all children who cannot swim.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stock or locate rescue equipment such as noodles, safety rings, and rope.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install alarms on doors and gates and use underwater alarms that detect entry into the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On the Water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Boating can be a fun experience for the whole family. From bug bites to poisonous plants, be sure to guard your kids from the danger and discomfort of skin irritants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid using heavily scented soaps and lotions if spending time outdoors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Insect-Repellents.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">repellent<\/a> that is effective in preventing bites from insects commonly found in your area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover arms and legs with clothing as much as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find out which poisonous plants grow in your area and teach your family to avoid them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn how to treat an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrensnational.org\/get-care\/health-library\/poison-ivy--poison-oak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">allergic rash<\/a> and when to seek medical help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety On Wheels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether the whole family is hitting the road for a vacation or your child is spinning around the neighborhood on a bike, these simple tips can help keep the journey pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure each child\u2019s car seat is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/campaign\/right-seat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">properly fitted<\/a>.
