This winter, we received a concerning call from a family living in a single-story home in Vevay about water seeping through the kitchen ceiling. Though it would have been easy to assume that the leak originated from the roof, our expert technicians suspected it was something more. After further investigation, we revealed the surprise offender: a leaky water pipe running through the ceiling!
After weeks of frigid temperatures, the pipes had frozen solid, forcing the water within them to expand. Typically, water pipes run through a home’s crawl space for better heat insulation. However, since this was an older home with multiple add-ons, the contractors had placed the water pipes through the ceiling instead. The crawl space wasn’t large enough to accommodate the expanded pipe.
What started as a seemingly convenient add-on became a soggy nightmare for the homeowners. The freezing temperatures caused the pipe to expand and leak, creating a cascade of woes once the cold snap thawed and water started flowing where it shouldn’t have. After our qualified technicians had located the source of the water leak, we went straight to work.

Our Water Mitigation and Restoration Process
During the initial assessment, our IICRC-certified technicians used infrared cameras and moisture meters to determine the extent of the water damage to the kitchen ceiling and floor. We then cleared the affected areas to begin the mitigation and drying.
Using state-of-the-art air movers and dehumidifiers, we eliminated the excess water. After restoring the moisture to regular levels, our crew disinfected the kitchen area with an EPA-registered solution. This step was important, as it stopped the spread of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) growth dead in its tracks. The work is still in progress at the time of this blog’s publication.
