Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc on communities in Louisiana and the northeastern United States from late August to early September. The wind and rain resulted in flooded homes and businesses, and widespread damage throughout the affected areas. An estimated 50 billion dollars in damage was caused by Ida, requiring a massive cleanup and recovery effort. Our team at PuroClean of Myrtle Beach saw a need to help our neighbors, so we packed up our truck, and headed to Louisiana. We assisted many people, including one couple who was just recently engaged.
Flooded Home Part of Hurricane Ida Recovery Effort
The day after Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana, our team arrived ready to begin recovery efforts. We started the first job, right away. A newly engaged couple moved into a brand new house in Ponchatoula, Louisiana less than a month before the hurricane. When Ida hit, the winds and rain caused the creek behind their house to overflow and flood their property.
The situation was devastating for all involved. The couple and their two small children lost almost all of their possessions. Our technicians arrived promptly to evaluate the condition of the property and work to restore things to their original condition. To make a bad situation worse, the storm knocked out all power, so we began working on the project in total darkness.

We started by removing all the contents from the flooded home. It took a full day to complete this task because of the lack of light and abundance of items. The next step was demolition. We had to cut off the bottom four feet of drywall around the entire 2,800 square foot house. The cutting and cleanup took two full days. The drywall was finally removed and we set up drying equipment. It was crucial to fully dry everything before reconstruction to avoid mold.
In the middle of the drying process, we suffered yet another complication. About a week after the hurricane, a tropical storm appeared, bringing more winds and rain, almost flooding the house again. This set us back as we had to wait out the weather. When we could finally continue, we finished up the drying in four days.
Our crew reported to Louisiana ready to assist, and we are proud of the obstacles we overcame and all that we accomplished in order to complete the job. We couldn’t prevent the natural disaster, but we did what we could to help our southern neighbors recover from flooded homes and other hurricane damage. We were even able to have a productive meeting with the couple’s insurance adjusters to ease the burden in such a time of great turmoil. We are always happy to help however we can.
