Hurricane Ida was a massive category 4 hurricane that ravaged many areas of the United States in late August and early September of 2021. It brought powerful winds and heavy rainfall as it marched across the country. Louisiana, in particular, was subjected to the brunt of the destruction as the storm made landfall over its southern Gulf coast. In an effort to help those most impacted, we traveled to Mandaville, Louisiana to help a family whose home suffered damage.
We Go Wherever the Wind Blows
Heavy rainfall and flash floods are what people typically associate with hurricanes, however, gale force winds are just as potent of a force to cause damage during the storm. The family we were helping had their home damaged after a large tree in their yard was knocked down and fell onto the home. After the impact, a significant amount of rain also came into the home.
We were tasked with drying the affected areas and performing the demolition to the areas that were going to be completely rebuilt. It was not a huge job in size, but we were able to get in there fast and save the property from further damage. The family was a young couple with an infant son and a 4-year-old daughter, so they really needed their home back in livable condition as soon as possible.
The damage was most prominent in the ceiling and the attic, but the water also ran down the walls inside. As a part of the drying process, we made several cuts to the drywall and ceiling. This way, we could get direct access to the moisture and be able to mitigate it most effectively. We set up air movers, which removed all of the water from the wood and insulation within the walls.
Thankfully, the house was not damaged to the point where the family would need to temporarily move out, and we were able to do our work without posing a danger to them. Within 3 days of our arrival, we successfully completed what we came there to do. The homeowners were thrilled that we could respond so fast. With so much damage caused by Hurricane Ida, they were scared it would be weeks, or even months before someone could help them.
