As the New Year begins, we are greeted with what could be the coldest weather sweeping down from the Arctic in over a decade. Many places further north will face winter storms and freezing temperatures, and while we rarely get down to those levels in South Florida, that does not mean we are safe. The coming low temperatures and dry air could catch us off guard since we do not have as much experience with them. After all, the biggest threat to us may not be the winter weather itself, but how equipped we are to handle it.
If you are facing a property damage issue, we at PuroClean of Ft. Lauderdale South can help. We provide water damage restoration, mold removal, and fire and smoke damage remediation services in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and neighboring areas. You can contact us 24/7 at (754) 732-8383.

Preparing for the Cold
- Cold air holds less moisture, which can increase condensation indoors. Excess condensation can result in mold growth, which can have detrimental effects on your health. Ensure that your property is properly ventilated and consider using dehumidifiers.
- Bring potted plants indoors and keep outdoor plants and trees watered. Remember that dry weather and wind create the perfect conditions for brush fires, so if you live near heavily forested or undeveloped land, keep your property well-manicured and free of dry or dead vegetation.
- Have your heating system inspected by a qualified professional at least once a year to make sure it works properly. This can help you avoid straining the system and increasing energy expenses.
Safety Measures for Using Heating Equipment
According to the NFPA, incorrect use of heating equipment is the leading cause of home fires from December to February. From 2018-2022, fire departments responded to an estimated average of 40,997 fires involving heating equipment per year, accounting for 12% of all reported home fires during this time, and these fires resulted in annual losses of 470 civilian deaths.
To prevent such incidents, we recommend that you take the following safety measures:
- Recommended smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed and their batteries regularly replaced.
- When using home heating equipment, prepare and inspect it before use so it is clean and in working order.
- Keep devices such as space heaters and candles at least 3 feet away from all flammable materials such as curtains and furniture, and out of reach for children or pets. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed.
- When using electric heaters, plug only one heater into a wall outlet at a time to avoid overloading the circuit. Avoid using extension cords, but if you must use one, ensure it is the proper size and length. Never run cords under rugs or carpets.
- Never use a range or oven to heat your home, which is a safety hazard and can be a source of dangerous carbon monoxide.
- Never use charcoal or other fuel-burning devices indoors, such as grills that produce carbon monoxide.
- Choose electric space heaters and use only those that are UL-approved. Look for models with safety features such as an automatic shut-off when tipped over.
