A home business can be an awesome opportunity to work and live in one location, saving money on office rent and time on a commute but, when a home business fire damage or water damage occurs, it doubles the stress and inconvenience on multiple levels. One local family found themselves in this situation until our team was able to step in and get the business and home back running.
PuroClean of Plymouth Meeting Helps Ensure Montgomery County Pets Can Look Their Best Once More!
On November 11, 2021, we received a call from a family in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, who experienced a home business fire. The husband, wife, and adult child live together where they run their pet grooming business. Thankfully, there were no injuries to the family or any animals. Unfortunately, our team needed to respond quickly to get the family’s business and home functioning again.
Our crew arrived promptly at the home to assess the scope of the damage and begin the work. We first started by removing the non-salvageable structural material. We carefully went through all of the affected items, setting aside anything that could be saved, including furniture and grooming equipment, so our team could restore them to their pre-loss conditions.

One of our biggest goals was the deodorization. Beyond just the fire-damaged surfaces, the smoke also had a deep impact on the property. We cleaned and deodorized the affected areas using carbon-filtered air scrubbers, thermal fogging, and old-fashioned, thorough manual cleaning. This included the affected HVAC system.
There was a lot to do in the house/business to restore the fire-damaged areas, but our crew really stepped up and worked together as a team to accomplish everything. Though we didn’t have time constraints, we made it a priority to work as efficiently and as effectively as possible to help the family regain some normalcy. The job was completed in just over five days. Two turtles, a gecko, and a multitude of fish were safely returned to their home, and then it was back to business grooming the pets of Montgomery County.
Home business fires can result from various causes, some of which include:
- Electrical Malfunctions: Faulty wiring, overloaded circuits, or malfunctioning electrical appliances can lead to electrical fires in homes.
- Heating Equipment: Space heaters, furnaces, and other heating appliances can ignite flammable materials if not used properly or if they malfunction.
- Cooking Accidents: Cooking equipment is a common cause of home fires, especially if left unattended or if flammable materials are too close to the stove.
- Smoking: Carelessly discarded cigarettes or smoking materials can ignite combustible materials, leading to fires.
- Chemical Hazards: Some home businesses may involve the use of chemicals that are flammable or reactive, increasing the risk of fire if not handled properly.
- Combustible Materials: Storing flammable materials such as paints, solvents, or papers near heat sources can increase the risk of fire.
- Appliance Malfunctions: Malfunctioning appliances such as dryers, microwaves, or toasters can generate sparks or overheating, leading to fires.
- Candles: Improper use of candles or leaving them unattended can result in fires, especially if they are placed near flammable materials.
- Arson: In some cases, home business fires may be intentionally set by an individual, whether for malicious intent or insurance fraud.
- Natural Disasters: Events such as lightning strikes, wildfires, or earthquakes can also cause fires in homes, including home businesses.
Preventing home business fires involves implementing safety measures such as installing smoke detectors, maintaining electrical systems, practicing safe cooking habits, storing chemicals properly, and having an evacuation plan in place.
