Mokena, IL Family Home Saved from Mysterious Black Mold Problem in Bathroom

Black mold is not what new home buyers are in the market for!

Last month PuroClean of Romeoville received a call from a customer in Mokena, IL who needed mold remediation services, pronto. They had a bathroom mold issue and they weren’t sure what was causing the damage. The bathroom ceiling had a section that had black mold, and since the home was getting ready for sale the owner wanted it addressed right away.

Our inspection of the mold situation in the bathroom revealed that a previous owner installed a ventilation fan in the bathroom. Since the bathroom shower was used every day, the likely culprit of the mold was the fan. It was suspected that the fan was not ventilated properly. However, there was no access to the attic to confirm or make repairs.

The owner elected to have us perform mold mitigation and reconstruction services. Once work began, the ceiling was opened and we confirmed that not only had the fan had not been vented at all, but it was left open into the attic! To compound the issues even further, the vent had been covered by insulation, completely eliminating any chance for air and moisture to circulate and escape properly.

We removed the drywall and insulation first, and then the rafters, framing and decking were HEPA vacuumed and treated with an antimicrobial to get rid of the existing mold.

Once the mold mitigation had been completed, the fan was properly vented (as it should have been originally!) and we replaced the drywall and insulation.

After everything was put back together, we gave it a good sanding and a final coat of paint – resulting in it looking like there had never been a mold issue at all. (That is the goal, after all!)

When all was said and done, this homeowner stated that they “Couldn’t be happier!!!!”
