Water damage can arise from many places, but one of the more uncommon causes is a slab leak. A slab leak occurs when one of the water and sewer lines going through your home’s foundation, known as a slab, bursts and releases water or sewage.
Common in older homes with copper or galvanized steel pipes, slab leaks can also carry unsafe contaminants such as bacteria and viruses from gray water. In these cases, the situation becomes a category-two water loss, which can threaten your health and the integrity of your home.
Chasing Down a Slab Leak
We recently answered the call for a Spring Valley homeowner who found water leaking through the floor across multiple rooms, including their kitchen, bathroom, living room, and hallways. We arrived on the scene and began our initial investigation.
Using our advanced moisture meters and infrared cameras, we quickly identified a slab leak that caused the damage. With the source tracked down, we also determined that the water was gray water, which meant we had a category-two loss on our hands. Thankfully, no abatement testing for asbestos was necessary.

Our team established a containment zone that helped prevent the spread of water damage and contaminants.
When our assessment concluded, our crew started the water damage restoration process. First, we established a containment zone that prevented contaminants from spreading further throughout the home. Next, we removed several damaged building materials, including drywall, hardwood flooring, baseboards, and vinyl flooring.
Having exposed the foundation and other parts of the home’s structure, we initiated the drying process by utilizing two advanced dehumidifiers and air scrubbers. Our IICRC-certified technicians monitored moisture levels daily as the home dried.

Our technicians removed damaged building materials (L), leaving the area ready for drying (R).
After five days of drying, we applied an anti-microbial solution to prevent mold growth. Upon completing the final assessment, we were satisfied that the homeowner’s property was safe, restored, and ready for reconstruction. Fantastic job, team!
