Do you have a problematic basement leaks?
Signs of water problems in your basement include water staining on the walls or floor. Pooling water is obviously a sign. If there is enough water introduced into the soil around your home from rain, snowmelt, or other sources it can increase the hydrostatic pressure (water pressure) of the soil around your home. Increasing the hydrostatic pressure can force water and moisture into your foundation.
Some leaks can be minor, but all should be addressed as once there is an inroad for water it will keep getting worse. Some fixes can be minor, like installing window well covers to kep window wells from filling up with water. Some fixes are more involved and require a contractor. Major cracks may need to be addressed by pulling the soil away from the foundation to do the repair.
Addressing the root cause of the water is important. Are you in a flood plain or an area with excessive ground water? Having a sump pump installed can be a worthwhile fix. Sump pump technology has evolved enough that there are now models that can alert your phone if there is too much water in your basement!
If the water problem is from a drainage issue, you may need to regrade the area near your foundation and install better drainage. Gutters can help as long as they are maintained and kept clear of debris.
