Fouled sewer lines can leak out sewage; a thick, dark water that forms. Sewage water is a dangerous health hazard and unsanitary; which contains contaminants like pathogens, viruses and bacteria. These dangerous contaminants may present risks of serious illness if animals or humans suffer exposure. Quick repair is key if you experience sewage backup anywhere in your home or business . Quickly taking care of this will prevent the hazardous waste water from staying in occupied areas. To prevent a hazardous condition occurring in your home or business, knowing what leads to the sewer problems could be extremely helpful. We’ve created a list of items to aid in preventing and dealing with home or business sewage backups:

Sewage Backup Causes

  • Blocked Drain Pipes – Sewage backs up into your home or business when your drain pipes or main sewer pipes become clogged. To present an example: if one toilet starts a sewage backup, the connected drain and/or numerous toilets and the main line may become fouled.
  • Imposing Tree Roots – Trees with large strong imposing roots have the potential to grow into and around pipes, even crushing sewer pipes. Tree roots can extend out to a long distance and damage your pipes, leading to a sewer backup. Keep an eye out for roots near your sewer mainline or septic tank area to protect them from damage.
  • Aging & Damaged Sewer Lines – Older sewer lines, pipes, drains and septic systems can fail by slowly weakening and crumbling over time – resulting in sewage backups, flooded homes, and basements full of sewage. Keep in mind the age of your home and neighborhood and look out for these potential problems.
  • Heavy Rainfall Amounts – Heavy amounts of rainfall can crowd your main storm and sewer mains. If it turns out that your public system can’t handle large rainfall amounts, the water can work its way into the sewer lines connected to the mainline, and set your home or business in a possibly dangerous exposure of sewer backup. There is a risk of serious health issues when in and around flooding waters in your region that happens from flooding in rivers and streams, hurricanes, and other associated weather, when water merges with sewage, impurities and chemicals. When wading in this waste use extreme caution, and also when the water decreases and starts drying. Organic matter that is dried out can then convert to be aerosolized and present a threat of breathing in these contaminants. Be positive to use proper PPE to protect against these dangerous risks.

I can’t say enough good things about the team at PuroClean of Strafford County, especially Randy. We had a customer dealing with an ice dam that caused water to leak into their library—of course it happened the day before I was leaving for vacation. Randy Corbin stepped in immediately and handled everything. He coordinated the cleanup, managed the dry-out process, and worked directly with the insurance company on billing. His communication and organization made a stressful situation much easier to manage. When I returned from vacation, the staff took the time to bring me up to speed and even educated me on the mitigation work that had been done. Their quick response likely prevented much more serious damage to the customer’s home. Because of their professionalism, efficiency, and responsiveness, PuroClean of Strafford County will absolutely be my go-to mitigation company moving forward for all of my clients’ homes. Highly recommend! 👏🏠💧
