Biohazard cleanup means working to clean up areas where a traumatic event has happened and requires professional cleanup. These are incidents where there are chemical spills, blood, or human and animal remains. Cleaning areas during a biohazard cleaning includes the application of EPA approved hospital grade disinfectants and complete deodorization of the affected space.

Biohazard Cleanup Services Include

  • Sewage Cleanup and Sanitation
  • Virus Decontamination and Protection
  • Blood and Bodily Fluid Remediation
  • Hoarding Cleanup
  • Crime Scene Cleanup
  • Deodorization and Odor Control

The state is not responsible for cleaning up a crime scene. Once police investigators gather evidence from the scene, it is the responsibility of the property owner to employ biohazard cleanup services. A professional cleanup company, like us, can arrive onsite only after the police have gathered all evidence pertaining to the crime.

The Blood Or Other Potentially Infectious Materials Standard

In 1991, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a standard to protect all workers from possible dangers of blood or other potentially infectious materials (BOPIM). Hepatitis B virus, HIV, the 2019 Novel coronavirus (COVID-19), are just a few examples of Infectious pathogens.

Approximately 5.6 million employees are helped by this standard in healthcare positions and related occupations, and includes biohazard cleanup companies as well. The BOPIM standard also covers the biohazard cleaning and removal industry.

Additionally, the BOPIM standard includes several prerequisites, as follows:

  • Conduct a Health and Safety Assessment (OSHA requirement)
  • Using work practice controls
  • Using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Proper handling, transport, and disposal of hazardous medical waste materials
  • Specific required vaccinations
  • Mandatory training
  • Record keeping

Common Biohazard Scenarios

  • Coronavirus contamination
  • Chemical hazards
  • Animal waste or remains
  • Hoarding scenes
  • Blood and bodily fluid
  • Suicide or death
  • Crime or homicide scenes

Our technicians face significant dangers each and every time they handle items that are potentially hazardous. For this reason, the practice of proper training and safety precautions are critically important. The training and safety methods are important for both the technicians employed on the project as well as the tenants who will be occupying the space once the biohazard remediation is complete.

Biohazard Cleanup Certification Requirements

To be employed as a biohazard specialist, a certificate is not required. However, biohazard technicians are strongly required to wear proper PPE when working in areas with bloodborne pathogens. The state of Georgia recently passed a law which affects any firm providing cleanup services related to trauma and crime scene cleaning and restoration. Therefore, you should refer to local city, state, and federal regulations that could call for special licensing or have certain laws in place for licensing requirements, background checks, fingerprinting or further factors that may apply to biohazard cleanup companies.

To protect the safety of our workers, PPE is used as the final barrier of defense. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) protects the body from coming into contact with hazardous items, through the skin, eyes, mouth, nose, or any other body parts. PPE specific items change depending on the job, but needs to always consist of cut resistant and nitrile gloves, full face guard, properly designated waterproof coveralls, and a respirator.

Furthermore, reputable restoration companies offer biohazard remediation courses for workers. That includes learning OSHA’s on-the-job safety procedures when handling biohazardous waste. Doing so reduces the potential of accidents and probable lawsuits.

PuroClean Biohazard Cleanup Procedures

  • The first task of the restoration crew is to inspect and flag all areas needing biohazard cleanup, perform a health and safety inspection, and identify the scope of the biohazard cleanup. When the specialists have a plan mapped out, restoration begins immediately
  • All technicians will take precautions to ensure their safety and that of anyone near the biohazard affected areas.
  • The crew will then eradicate and dispose of all possibly infectious materials from the project.
  • OSHA rules dictate exactly how hazardous medical waste is to be handled. For example: spinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, and any additional bodily fluids are carefully handled and moved to a licensed hazardous medical waste incinerator.
  • According to state regulations and industry guidelines, technicians are required to dispose of porous materials like fabric and carpeting that cannot be properly cleaned.
  • Non-porous items that can be salvaged will be cleansed with hospital grade cleaning products. If these items are unable to be restored, our technicians will remove and dispose of these items.
  • Following the cleaning procedures, technicians deodorize all affected locations and return these places to pre-contamination shape and appearance. One thing to do that proves areas are fully cleansed and ready again for habitation is to have a licensed industrial Hygienist conduct clearance testing.
  • Odors can usually be managed by the removal of unsalvageable affected materials and by cleaning items with hospital-grade cleaning products. However, tough situations may call for additional procedures of deodorization to achieve success.

AMAZING!!!! I called to have someone come over and check the bathrooms for mold. The gentleman came over in the afternoon, same day. And told me that it is mold but that he doesn't need to do anything and that I can take care it. He gave me the list of things to buy and what to do and left without charging! I found myself wanting to give him money because of his honesty. He could have easily taken advantage of me. In addition, he explained the details of our mild problem in an understandable way. I will ABSOLUTELY call again for any mold work.
