As Vermonters, we are used to it getting cold, but we sometimes need a reminder of the steps to take when the deep freeze hits and not get complacent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keep the heat on<\/strong> \u2013 Maintain indoor temps at least <strong>55\u00b0F<\/strong>, even if you\u2019re away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open cabinet doors<\/strong> \u2013 Especially under sinks, to let warm air circulate around pipes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insulate exposed pipes<\/strong> \u2013 Use pipe insulation or heat tape for pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and attics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Let faucets drip<\/strong> \u2013 A slow trickle helps relieve pressure and prevent freezing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seal leaks<\/strong> \u2013 Close gaps near pipes where cold air can enter (around windows, doors, and foundation cracks).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disconnect hoses &amp; shut outdoor valves<\/strong> \u2013 Prevent water from freezing in exterior lines.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if it&#8217;s too late? The pipes have broken &#8211; then what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turn off the main water supply<\/strong> immediately. Open faucets to relieve pressure.Apply gentle heat (hair dryer, heating pad) to the frozen section\u2014never use an open flame.
