As we approach hurricane season, now is the time to begin preparing your property before disaster strikes.
This mountain community is one that our team assisted during disaster recovery efforts after severe flooding devastated the area. Unfortunately, this particular property was not prepared. The home was underinsured, and because it was a family property only occupied occasionally for reunions and visits, FEMA assistance was not available. The homeowner was left paying out of pocket for restoration services and repairs.
Situations like this are heartbreaking but many of them can be lessened with proper preparation and insurance planning.
Here are a few things every homeowner should review before storm season arrives:
Schedule a policy review with your insurance agent/company.
Do you have sump pump coverage?
Do you have sewer and drain backup coverage?
Do you have current photos/videos of your rooms and belongings?
Do you have a flood prevention plan? (Sandbags, water shutoffs, battery backups, etc.)
If you are leaving town, have you secured outdoor furniture and stored patio umbrellas?
Store contents in plastic containers whenever possible, especially in basements. Wet cardboard is one of the perfect breeding grounds for mold growth.
Preparation today can make a major difference tomorrow.
