Keeping an Eye out for Water

Water damage and mold can happen to anybody, anywhere, at any time. Check your home regularly!

Even small amounts of water can be devastating to your home and belongings. Often enough water finds a way in, whether it is through your roof, basement, walls, or pipes. Water in your home can cause extensive damage and mold growth. So, it is vital to keep an eye out for leaks and other sources of unwanted water in your home. Here is how to detect water to prevent further damage in your home:

  • Daily/Weekly: Inspect ceilings and walls for water staining.
  • Monthly: Check for signs of water like dripping at sinks, toilets, refrigerator/freezer, and all other sources of water. Also, replace or clean A/C filters.
  • Annually: Service HVAC system.
  • As Needed: Find source of water-discolored surfaces. Also check for standing water around the foundation and make sure water from downspouts are flowing away from the foundation.

For those that have a hard time moving around, who are living on their own, water damage and mold can fester. If you have any elderly family members, or even neighbors that may have a hard time moving around, chances are they are not checking their basements or hard to reach places in their homes for leaks or damage. We recommend that someone is checking their homes as well.
