Responding to a Residential Fire Loss

Recently, the PuroClean Western Reserve team responded to a residential fire that originated in the basement of a home. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical failure involving a mini refrigerator.

While the fire started in the basement, the effects extended throughout the home. Heavy soot was present on surfaces throughout the basement, first floor and second floor, creating extensive cleanup and restoration needs.

Assessing the Damage

When our team arrived, we conducted a thorough inspection to determine the full scope of the damage. In addition to fire and smoke damage, water from firefighting efforts and a damaged PEX water line contributed to the overall loss.

Because smoke and soot can travel into hidden spaces, additional inspection was needed to determine whether soot had entered wall cavities and other concealed areas of the home.

Restoration Efforts

The restoration process included:

• Preparing the property for reconstruction and restoration

• Assessing fire, smoke, and soot damage throughout the property

• Installing air scrubbers to improve indoor air quality

• Evaluating affected drywall and structural materials

• Demolishing damaged materials throughout the basement, first floor, and second floor

• Removing multiple layers of flooring and underlayment in affected areas

• Addressing water damage caused by firefighting efforts and the damaged PEX water line

• Removing debris and preparing the property for reconstruction

Next Steps

Fire damage often extends beyond the area where the fire began. In this case, smoke, soot, water damage, and structural concerns affected multiple levels of the home, requiring a comprehensive restoration plan.
