There is an old American tale that dates back to our 27th president, William Howard Taft. The story goes that President Taft did not fit in the White House bathtub, so they replaced it so he wouldn’t get stuck. This fable has been repeated in history classes for generations, often earning a good chuckle, (and ultimately was determined to be untrue by historians.) And, while it’s just a bit of American presidential ‘dirt,’ there’s a valuable moral to the story that we, as restoration professionals, could take away: when working in bathrooms, don’t underestimate the tub.
Splish Splash It Was Under The Bath
We shared that little anecdote because it ties into a recent water restoration job, where we had a big problem: we could not immediately find the source of the leak. The leak, however, was fairly substantial and causing significant damage. Although we struggled to pin down precisely where the water was coming from, we could only tell it originated from the upstairs level. The water began somewhere underneath the shower and was causing damage to the drywall all the way down to the garage ceiling.
The home suffering from this so-far-undetermined damage belonged to a lovely family of 5, living in Kingwood with their two wonderful dogs. We knew that this was an active family, and the water damage was seriously intruding on their lives. So, we had to locate the source and mitigate the problem. As it turns out, we had to solve our problem the same way that President Taft was rumored to do: by removing the bathtub.
A pipe had burst within the bathroom floor, and removing the bathtub cleared the major obstruction. We finally repaired the source of the leak and began drying the affected drywall. Our team completed the work with haste and efficiency. Three days after we arrived, the home was restored to its original, pre-loss condition, and the clients were happily back to their normal routines.
