When a sewer line is blocked, the sewage that is thick and dark can be dangerous to your health. This sewer water is extremely unsanitary, containing contaminants like bacteria, viruses and pathogens. All of these dangerous germs can pose a serious health risk and lead to many illnesses if humans or animals suffer exposure. If it happens that you experience sewage backup on the property of your home or business, or a toilet backup in either location, fixing either one is of the highest importance. Having this unsanitary sewer water in your home is not safe and should be removed as soon as possible. Also, to know what is causing the sewer obstruction may aid in stopping this potentially hazardous situation. To help you in handling sewage backups in your home or business, here’s a list of things that may help:
Our process for cleaning and restoration of Category 3 water, also known as sewer and contaminated water backup clean up following the IICRC industry standards, is as follows:
1. To ensure the safety of all occupants and personnel by limiting jobsite traffic to restoration and cleanup personnel only to help stop any health related occurrences.
2. Health and Safety checks and assessment of the entire work premises.
3. Ensure all restoration personnel are outfitted with the proper personal protection equipment (PPE). This may include but is not limited to:
4. Put into place established engineering controls, critical barriers, to stop cross-contamination.
5. Removing any type of probable safety risks if at all possible.
6. Disposal, removal of bulk sewage water, soil, and contaminates.
7. Removal of all contaminated porous and semi-porous materials that are not salvageable, which can include but are not limited to:
8. Cleaning procedures implemented, as well as the use of EPA registered biocides and antimicrobials
9. Physical cleaning of all remaining structures
10. It is recommended to hire a third party Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) for a safety clearance test to ensure the entire site is returned to pre-loss condition for health and safety.
11. Drying of all materials affected by the sewer water intrusion back to pre-loss dry standard
12. After completion of remediation – Sanitization of all equipment used
13. All demo materials removed from the building
