When a sewer line is blocked, the sewage that is thick and dark is dangerous to your health. This sewer water is extremely unsanitary, containing contaminants such as bacteria, viruses and pathogens. All of these dangerous germs can pose a serious health risk and cause many illnesses if humans or animals are exposed. If it happens that you suffer a sewage backup on the premises of your home or business, or a toilet backup in either location, fixing either one is of the highest priority. Having this filthy sewer water in your home is dangerous and should be removed immediately. Furthermore, to know what is causing the sewer backups may aid in preventing this potentially hazardous incident. To help you in managing sewage backups in your home or business, following is a list of things that may help:

Sewage Backup Causes

  • Blocked Drain Pipes – Sewage backs up into your home or business when your drain pipes or main sewer pipes become blocked. To present an example: if one bathroom starts a sewage backup, the attached drain and/or numerous toilets and the main line may become fouled.
  • Imposing Tree Roots – Trees with large strong long roots have the ability to grow through and around pipes, even crushing sewer pipes. Tree roots can reach a long distance and damage your pipes, causing a sewer backup. Be very aware of roots near your drain lines or septic tank area to protect them from damage.
  • Aging & Damaged Sewer Lines – Aging sewer lines, pipes, drains and septic systems will fail by slowly cracking and crumbling over time – causing sewage backups, water filled homes, and basements full of sewer water. Pay attention to the age of your home and neighborhood and look out for these potential problems.
  • Large Rainfall Amounts – Heavy amounts of rainfall can overwhelm your main storm and sewer lines. If it happens that your public sewers can’t handle large rainfall levels, the water can backflow its way into the sewer lines connected to the mainline, and place your home or business in a likely dangerous exposure of sewer backup. There is a risk of serious health issues when in and around flooding waters in your area that occurs from flooding in rivers and streams, hurricanes, and other associated weather, when water merges with sewage, impurities and chemicals. When wading in these waters use extreme caution, and also when the water diminishes and starts drying. Organic substance that is dried out can then become aerosolized and present a danger of inhaling in these contaminants. Be positive to use proper PPE to protect against these dangerous risks.
