The picture below shows just how small odor particles are. The human hair in the picture is 70 microns in diameter. A micron is one-millionth of a meter long. The smallest odor particles that humans can detect are less than one micron, or perhaps 100X smaller than the diameter of a human hair. It is incredible what the nose can detect.
1. Remove porous materials

Our arsenal of processes, EPA-approved chemistry solutions, equipment, experience, and training equip us to tackle the toughest of odor jobs. We have fixed raw sewage in crawlspaces. We know when to remove materials, and when and how to clean, deodorize, and disinfect odor-damaged materials.
Closing Comments: The worst thing to do with cigarette smoke damage on the walls is to paint over them. The very tiny odor particles permeate the paint and enter the volume air living space, producing malodors. And the paint serves to cover and thus prevent access to the damaged surface. Lastly, the paint does not adhere well to smoke damaged surfaces and its appearance is unpredictable.
When we are done, the majority of the time post-cleaning painting is not required, even when the odor-producing damage is decades old. Even if painting is desired, having a cleaned surface makes the for the best substrate for the fresh paint.
