How to Make a Fire Escape Plan

Fire Restoration

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), only one in three American households has developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Even more concerning, many people believe they would have at least six minutes to escape a fire before it becomes life-threatening.

In reality, you often have far less time.

In a fast-moving fire—especially in a dense urban area like Miami—conditions can turn deadly in just minutes. Smoke spreads quickly, visibility drops, and toxic gases fill the air. And yet, only a small percentage of people say their first instinct when hearing a smoke alarm would be to immediately get out.

That needs to change.

At PuroClean of Downtown Miami, we see firsthand how devastating residential fires can be. The good news? Preparation dramatically increases survival.

Here’s how to build a strong home fire escape plan in Miami, FL.

1. Make Sure First Responders Can Find You

Go outside and check:

  • Is your street number clearly visible from the road?

  • Is it illuminated at night?

  • Is it blocked by landscaping?

In an emergency, seconds matter. Clear visibility helps firefighters reach you faster.

2. Map Out Two Ways Out of Every Room

Draw a simple floor plan of your home and:

  • Mark two exits from each room (door and window).

  • Identify all smoke alarm locations.

  • Highlight primary and secondary escape routes.

In Miami homes and high-rise apartments, exits may vary—know them in advance.

3. Check Doors and Windows

  • Make sure all exterior doors open easily.

  • Confirm windows are not painted shut.

  • Ensure security bars have quick-release mechanisms.

An exit that doesn’t open is not an exit.

4. Choose a Safe Outdoor Meeting Spot

Select a meeting location a safe distance from the home, such as:

  • A mailbox

  • A tree

  • A light pole

Mark this clearly on your escape plan. Everyone must go directly there after exiting.

No exceptions.

5. Close Doors Behind You

As you leave, close doors. This slows fire spread and limits oxygen flow, buying critical escape time.

6. Practice Twice a Year

Practice your fire drill:

  • During the day

  • At night

Do it twice per year with everyone in the household. Practice builds automatic response.

When panic hits, muscle memory takes over.

7. Teach Children to Escape Independently

Children must know:

  • How to unlock doors.

  • How to open windows.

  • How to crawl low under smoke.

Do not assume you’ll be able to reach them during a fire.

8. Get Out Immediately When the Alarm Sounds

When a smoke alarm activates:

  • Get out immediately.

  • Do not investigate.

  • Do not gather belongings.

  • Never go back inside.

Re-entry is one of the most dangerous decisions people make during a fire.

9. Prepare to Crawl Under Smoke

Smoke rises. Cleaner air is lower.

During drills, practice:

  • Staying low.

  • Crawling toward exits.

  • Covering your mouth if needed.

Toxic smoke, not flames, causes most fire-related deaths.

10. “Seal Yourself In” if Escape Isn’t Possible

In high-rise or apartment buildings common in Miami, evacuation may not always be safest.

If fire or smoke blocks your exit:

  • Close all doors between you and the fire.

  • Seal cracks with duct tape or wet towels.

  • Cover vents to block smoke.

  • Call 911 and report your exact location.

  • Signal from a window with a flashlight or light-colored cloth.

This strategy can buy valuable time until firefighters reach you.

11. Plan for Household Members with Disabilities

Your fire escape plan must account for:

  • Mobility challenges

  • Hearing impairments

  • Medical equipment

  • Young children

Assign responsibilities in advance so everyone knows their role.

12. Inform Guests and Ask About Other Homes

When guests stay over, review your fire escape plan with them.

When your children attend sleepovers, ask the host family:

  • Do you have a fire escape plan?

  • Where are your smoke alarms?

  • What’s the meeting spot outside?

If they don’t have a plan, help them create one.

Prepared families protect each other.
