Midnight Snack: Refrigerator Floods the Kitchen in the Middle of the Night

As the “Paramedics of Property Damage,” we are always on-call to respond to emergencies when they happen. This means we can receive calls at all hours of the day and the waning hours of the night. Recently, a retired couple called us to their Boerne home at 3:00 am with a widespread water emergency. Ever vigilant, our crew on the late shift headed out to mitigate the emergency.

“Is Your Refrigerator Running? You’d Better Go Catch It!”

The flooding occurred when the plastic tubing on the back of a new refrigerator popped off in the middle of the night and began spraying water. It affected their whole house: kitchen, office, master bedroom, master closets, spare bedroom, living room, dining room, and hallway. 

The homeowner had several area rugs that were saturated. We pulled them from the house, used the Rover (a rideable piece of drying equipment that slowly moves over and extracts moisture) to remove all the excess water, positioned them over some moving dollies, and used air movers to help dry them out. Next, we set up air movers in the entryway to the master bedroom to dry the saturated carpeting. We had to remove the trim from around the bottom of the kitchen island to be able to push air underneath to dry the water that traveled underneath.

Most of our team was in Louisiana at the time of the call, helping out with the floods they were suffering from. Nonetheless, our Lead Technician, Audra, began the restoration all by her lonesome. She extracted the water and set up equipment for the first few hours until 8:30 am, when our franchise owner, U.L., arrived after driving through the night from Louisiana with reinforcements to help out.

We were able to complete the water restoration in only 3 days. The homeowners were so extremely grateful that we arrived on the scene so quickly.
