Water damage can occur from various sources, but there are a few that are the most common you should look out for. Bursted pipes are the most common cause of water damage. Often times the roots from shrubs and trees in yards can dig deep enough and damage your water pipes as well. High water pressure, storms, and extreme temperatures are also causes of water damage.
Burst Pipes
Burst pipes are an often occurring reason behind water damage. This is usually caused by excessive water pressure that exceeds the pipes’ capacity, causing them to burst. If you hear banging for your pipes, this is a good indicator that the water pressure from your supplier is too high.
Storm Damage
If there is a significant hail or wind storm, it can penetrate through your roof or windows and allow rain to infiltrate. Floods can also cause severe water damage; causing leaky ceilings, and carpet damage. Regularly inspect your ceiling and floors for any sign of water damage after a storm.
Sewage Faults
Underground plumbing issues are often hard to spot, but if you notice slow drains, foul smells in your basement, or mold and mildew, this could be a sign of sewage faults. Sewage line failures are often caused by rusted pipes, blockage, and tree root intrusion.
Leaky Roofs
Roofs leak most often when they are quite old and cracks have started forming in the metal. Make sure to have top-quality roofing materials and replace any missing tiles. Heavy rains bring corrosion in metal even faster so be sure to check often for leaks or missing shingles.
