PuroClean RapidDefense™ is the best way to sanitize public areas. Our system helps stop the spread of pathogen-based illnesses, such as Influenza and Norovirus.

Biohazard remediation involves cleaning, application of EPA approved hospital grade disinfectants, and deodorizing locations where a traumatic event such as an accident, injury, or death has occurred. Thus, dealing with biohazards often means working with blood, human or animal remains, chemical spills, and more.

Biohazard Cleanup Services Include

Bear in mind that state employees aren’t required to sanitize crime scenes. When the authorities and investigators have completed gathering their evidence, the burden falls to the owner of the property to arrange biohazard cleaning professionals. Only after police have collected pertinent evidence and have re-opened the scene can biohazard cleanup professionals start their work.

The Blood Or Other Potentially Infectious Materials Standard

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) posted a standard in 1991 to protect all workers from the dangers of blood or other potentially infectious materials (BOPIM). Hepatitis B virus, HIV, the 2019 Novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and many more are examples of Infectious pathogens.

An estimated 5.6 million workers in healthcare and related jobs are helped by this standard. The biohazard remediation and cleaning Industry is also covered under the BOPIM standard.

Additionally, the BOPIM standard includes several prerequisites, including:

  • Record keeping
  • Mandatory training
  • Specific required vaccinations
  • Proper handling, transport and disposal of hazardous medical waste materials
  • Using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Using work practice controls
  • Conduct a Health and Safety Assessment (OSHA requirement)

More Common Biohazard Scenarios

  • Crime or homicide scenes
  • Suicide or death
  • Blood and bodily fluid
  • Hoarding scenes
  • Animal waste or remains
  • Chemical hazards
  • Coronavirus contamination

Every occurrence that technicians need to handle potentially hazardous materials, it is done so at a significant risk. Therefore, adhering to safety procedures and proper training is necessary. The importance of these rules are both for the employees and residents who will later occupy the previously contaminated space. The technicians and residents depend on these safety guidelines. The safety of both technicians and residents from biohazard dangers is of utmost importance during and after the project.

Is Certification Needed to Perform Biohazard Cleanup?

Biohazard workers are not required to obtain a special certificate to do their work. They are to follow OSHA requirements, however, to don the proper PPE when working with or around bloodborne pathogens. We also recommend you check the local city, state, and federal regulations for possible licensing obligations, laws, background checks, fingerprinting or additional requirements to perform biohazard restoration. For example, the state of Georgia voted in a new law that is connected to any company performing restoration services for crime scene and trauma restoration.

PPE ensures the safety of employees and is the last line of defense. This equipment guards the skin, eyes, mouth, nose and other areas from being exposed to hazardous material. The extent of PPE used on each project may differ on different projects. However, PPE should always include full face protection, cut resistant and nitrile gloves, properly designated waterproof coveralls and a respirator.

Reputable and trustworthy remediation firms train their technicians to work in the biohazard restoration field. This training includes implementing OSHA’s directions for handling biohazardous materials. This training protects all involved: technicians, bystanders, and future tenants. Furthermore, the risk of accidents and potential lawsuits reduces greatly.

The PuroClean Process of Biohazard Cleanup

  • The first task of the remediation crew is to inspect and flag all areas that need biohazard cleanup, perform a health and safety assessment, and identify the scope of the biohazard cleanup. When the technicians have a plan mapped out, restoration begins immediately
  • All technicians will take precautions to ensure their safety and that of anyone near the biohazard affected areas.
  • The PuroClean technicians will then remove and dispose of all potentially infectious materials from the project.
  • OSHA rules dictate exactly the way hazardous medical waste should be handled. As an example: spinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, and any other bodily fluids are carefully handled and transported to a licensed hazardous medical waste incinerator.
  • According to state regulations and industry guidelines, technicians are required to dispose of porous materials such as fabric and carpeting that cannot be properly cleaned.
  • Non-porous items that can be salvaged will be cleansed with hospital grade disinfectants. If these items are non-restorable, our technicians will remove and dispose of the items.
  • Following the cleaning procedures, technicians deodorize all affected locations and return these places to pre-contamination shape and appearance. One procedure that proves areas are fully cleansed and ready again for habitation is to have a licensed industrial Hygienist conduct clearance testing.
  • Odors can usually be managed by the eradication of unsalvageable affected materials and by washing items with hospital-grade cleaning products. However, difficult situations may call for additional procedures of deodorization to achieve success.
