As leaders in the restoration field, we help people through some of their more challenging moments. Disasters can affect their victims in a number of ways. We strive to follow the guiding principles of empathy and compassion, never forgetting the emotions involved with these circumstances. Sometimes, this involves losing a loved one. For these situations, we humbly serve the critical role of cleaning up the remains.
Cleaning Up After The Unattended Death
Recently, a property management company called us after their tenant had tripped, fallen, and passed away over the course of three days before her body was discovered. The woman who passed was the mother of one of the company’s employees, and we were able to communicate directly with her. Obviously, this was devastating for her, and she wanted to recover some personal items in the home before we began cleaning up. We advised her against this, but understanding the emotions involved, we provided her with one of our active carbon respirators to help her enter the home and manage the odors.
The first step in our job was to clean up the body fluids and eliminate the smell. It was a challenging job because we could not locate all of the affected materials. We started small with just the baseboards and cleaned everything. Unfortunately, the smell persisted, so we removed the sheetrock and a built-in cabinet in the bathroom. To be safe, we even removed the grout, just in case it had trapped any unpleasant smell.
It took multiple days, but eventually, after the third visit, we were able to get rid of the odor. It surprised us how far some of the body fluids had traveled down the bottom sill plate of the wall cavity. We were halfway down the hallway in a closet, removing sheetrock and flushing the bottom sill plates.
Once we located, cleaned, sanitized, and deodorized all of the affected areas, we began replacing all the materials we removed. The job did not have many time constraints, although we still were cognizant of working as quickly as possible. We did our initial cleaning on that Friday night, and over the course of the next week, we would do a little more to make sure we got everything cleaned without having to remove an excessive amount of material.
