Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions: Asbestos Abatement

The only way to confirm the presence of asbestos is through professional testing. Visual inspection is not enough. If your building was constructed before the late 1980s, asbestos might be present in floor tiles, pipe insulation, popcorn ceilings, or roofing. We coordinate with certified Asbestos Inspectors to take samples and have them analyzed by an ELAP-certified laboratory.

Asbestos is generally only a health risk when it is “friable”—meaning it is crumbling, damaged, or disturbed in a way that releases microscopic fibers into the air. If the material is in good condition and left alone, it often poses no immediate threat. However, if you are planning a renovation or demolition, you are legally required to have it professionally removed first.

Yes. In the five boroughs, any project that disturbs more than 10 square feet or 25 linear feet of asbestos-containing material is considered an “Asbestos Project” by the NYC DEP. This requires filing an ACP-7 Form. For smaller projects, an ACP-5 (Asbestos Assessment Report) is still typically required to prove to the Department of Buildings (DOB) that the work area is safe.

We strongly advise against it. Aside from the severe health risks of inhaling fibers, New York has strict laws (NYS Industrial Code Rule 56) regarding the handling and disposal of asbestos. Improper removal can lead to heavy fines, legal liability, and a contaminated environment that is much more expensive to clean up later.

The timeline depends on the size of the project and the required “wait periods” for air clearance. A standard residential project typically takes 3 to 5 days. This includes site setup (containment), the removal itself, a mandatory settling period for the air, and final clearance testing by an independent laboratory.

This can change based on intervening variables and actors on a “per job basis”

For most interior projects, the work area must be completely vacated and sealed off. While you may be able to stay in other parts of a large building, we generally recommend vacating the immediate area to ensure total safety and to allow our team to maintain the necessary negative air pressure within the containment zone.

All asbestos waste is double-bagged in 6-mil leak-tight bags, labeled, and transported by a licensed hauler to a specialized landfill authorized to receive hazardous waste. We provide you with a Waste Shipment Manifest as part of your final project documentation to prove the material was disposed of legally.
