We need to prepare and be safe. As Vermonters, we are used to it getting cold, but we sometimes need a reminder of the steps to take when the deep freeze hits and not get complacent.
- Keep the heat on – Maintain indoor temps at least 55°F, even if you’re away.
- Open cabinet doors – Especially under sinks, to let warm air circulate around pipes.
- Insulate exposed pipes – Use pipe insulation or heat tape for pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and attics.
- Let faucets drip – A slow trickle helps relieve pressure and prevent freezing.
- Seal leaks – Close gaps near pipes where cold air can enter (around windows, doors, and foundation cracks).
- Disconnect hoses & shut outdoor valves – Prevent water from freezing in exterior lines.
What if it’s too late? The pipes have broken – then what?
Turn off the main water supply immediately. Open faucets to relieve pressure.Apply gentle heat (hair dryer, heating pad) to the frozen section—never use an open flame. Call a professional plumber if you can’t locate or thaw the pipe. If a pipe bursts:
- Shut off the water supply.
- Turn off electricity in affected areas.
- Begin cleanup and contact a water damage restoration service (like PuroClean) ASAP to prevent mold.
