Snow on your roof, hanging over the eaves. Isn’t that a beautiful sight? It’s almost like something out of a Currier and Ives print. So take a photo, but then immediately knock it down. For as picturesque as it can be, snow on your roof can also be damaging to your Fairfield or Westchester County home when it turns into ice dams.

There is more than one type of ice dam. For instance, one can occur when chunks of ice clump together to block the flow of a river. But a different kind of ice dam can form on your roof, causing water damage to your home if not taken care of quickly.

What is an Ice Dam?

Ice dams form when snow on your roof melts and then refreezes at the edges of the roof. This builds up a ridge of ice that prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. This happens when warm air that escapes from your house warms the surface of the roof and melts the lowest layer of snow on top of it. That melted snow flows down your roof until it reaches the colder eaves where it refreezes. When this happens over and over, a dam-like structure is created that traps water on the roof.
