Fouled sewer lines can leak out sewage; a thick, dark substance that forms. Sewage water is a serious health hazard and unsanitary; which contains contaminants like pathogens, viruses and bacteria. These dangerous contaminants may present risks of serious illness if animals or humans suffer exposure. Timely repair is key if you experience sewage backup anywhere in your home or business . Quickly repairing this will prevent the dangerous waste water from staying in occupied areas. To prevent a hazardous condition happening in your home or business, knowing what causes the sewer backups could be extremely helpful. We’ve put together a list of items to aid in preventing and handling home or business sewage backups:

Causes of Sewage Backup

  • Clogged Drain Pipes – Sewage backs up into your home or business when your drain pipes or main sewer pipes become clogged. As an example: if one commode starts a sewage backup, the attached drain and/or multiple toilets and the main sewer may become blocked.
  • Imposing Tree Roots – Trees that have large strong plentiful roots have the capacity to grow into and around pipes, even crushing sewer pipes. Tree roots can reach a long distance and wreak havoc on your pipes, causing a sewer backup. Be very aware of roots near your main sewer lines or septic tank area to protect them from damage.
  • Aging & Damaged Sewer Lines – Older sewer lines, pipes, drains and septic systems will fail by slowly weakening and crumbling over time – causing sewage backups, water filled homes, and basements full of sewer water. Keep in mind the age of your home and neighborhood and keep an eye out for these potential problems.
  • Heavy Rainfall Amounts – Heavy amounts of rain can overwhelm your main storm and sewer lines. If it happens that your public system can’t handle large rainfall amounts, the water can work its way into the sewer lines linked to the mainline, and put your home or business in a potentially dangerous possibility of sewer backup. There is a risk of severe health issues when in and around flooding waters in your town or city that occurs from flooding in rivers and streams, hurricanes, and other similar weather, when water combines with sewage, contaminants and chemicals. When wading in this waste use extreme caution, and also when the water decreases and starts drying. Organic substance that is dried out can then become aerosolized and present a threat of inhaling in these contaminants. Be sure to use proper PPE to protect against these dangerous risks.
