The Importance of Contents Cleaning After a Fire

In the aftermath of a fire, the damage to your belongings can feel overwhelming. While structural restoration is critical, contents cleaning after a fire focuses on salvaging the items inside your property. Fires can destroy possessions through direct exposure to flames, while smoke, soot, and water used to extinguish the fire cause extensive secondary damage. Without prompt and professional cleaning, many of your belongings could suffer irreversible harm.

Contents cleaning services aim to recover items that might seem beyond saving. Whether it’s family heirlooms, important documents, valuable electronics, or everyday necessities, professional restoration plays a significant role in the recovery process, minimizing both emotional and financial losses caused by a fire.

Our Contents Cleaning Process in Raleigh, NC

We follow a detailed, methodical approach to ensure the best results for your belongings during contents cleaning after a fire in Raleigh, NC. Here’s how we handle the process:

1. Assessment and Inventory

Our process begins with a thorough assessment of the damage to your belongings. Each item is inspected to determine its condition and categorized based on the level of damage. Non-salvageable items are documented for insurance purposes, while salvageable items are identified and prioritized for restoration.

2. Packing and Removal

After the assessment, we carefully pack and remove salvageable items to prevent further damage. These items are transported to our secure facility, where cleaning and restoration are performed in a controlled environment. This step ensures that your belongings are protected while structural repairs are ongoing.

3. Specialized Cleaning

Using advanced techniques and equipment, we restore a wide range of items, including furniture, electronics, clothing, and more. Our contents cleaning after a fire process includes:

  • Ultrasonic Cleaning: Ideal for delicate items like glass, jewelry, and electronics.
  • Deodorization: Removes smoke odors from fabrics, upholstery, and other porous materials.
  • Deep Cleaning: Effectively removes soot and residue from furniture, appliances, and surfaces.

4. Restoration and Repair

Once cleaning is complete, we focus on restoring your belongings to their pre-loss condition. This includes repairing furniture, restoring photographs and artwork, and ensuring appliances and electronics are functional. Our goal is to bring your valuable possessions back to life.

5. Return and Reinstallation

After restoration, we carefully return your belongings to your property. From furniture placement to setting up electronics, we ensure everything is returned to its rightful place, helping you take the first step toward normalcy.

If you’re looking for a company like PuroClean, chances are you’re in the middle of a very stressful experience and you’re looking for a seasoned professional that you can trust to guide you through the process and get your home and your life back on track. That’s what we needed, and Glenn seemed to suit our needs. But while he initially presented himself as eager to help and willing to guide us every step of the way, once we were in the thick of it and at his mercy, we experienced broken promises, and a sudden hostile personality change. From literally saying the words, “I’m here to explain it all to you, if you have the same question ten times that just means it’s important and you need to understand”... to... “I can’t keep going over this with you, if you don’t sign I’m going to have my crew leave immediately”— all because I asked him to explain what effect the form had on the work they would do that day. His crew confirmed there would be no difference, they would be completing a peroxide spray down of the crawl space whether we were waiving post clearance testing, or not. Glenn also told me that when our dry-out was complete, he could have his floor guy to us immediately and without delay. I stressed this to him more than once, because I know how busy contractors are these days and I was trying to keep things moving. He told me his guy would come immediately. Then I asked about how this contractor would be paid, and he said, “I pay my guys, and then when your insurance check comes, you pay me.” But suddenly, the day before the flooring guy is due to come out, I get mixed messages and ignored (first, a text stating we would need to pay in full; then, a conversation in which he blamed Siri for the misinformation and stated we would just need to pay the deductible (which we had explained several times that we had already satisfied); and then, promises to look into it and get back to me by the end of the day which he did not do). Along the way he made several small promises (ie to check in with the air quality testing company to see if our report could be expedited, to check in by text daily about progress, to return a call “after my conference call” which he never did, only responding a day later upon my follow up.) Ultimately, with about twelve hours until his floor guy was due to show up, he finally answered by text to say that PuroClean would no longer be able to help with repairs as they were “too busy”. When I reminded him he said all along that the very guy he was sending was to be his subcontractor, he admitted his lie. At that point, we had (THANK GOODNESS!) already hired a different floor contractor to come. Now, the good. The techs are great. Wayne, especially, went above and beyond to answer all of my questions and concerns, and never seemed annoyed by my desire to understand. He even told me he worried that him/his crew may have damaged by dryer, since there was a dent on top. A photo I had taken prior to the start of work showed it was pre-existing, but I was so heartened by his honesty even when it may have been a liability to himself. He was great, a real asset to the company. It’s too bad they couldn’t have someone like him on the customer service end of things. That said, Wayne was the only positive part of the experience with PuroClean, and unfortunately, that was not enough to overcome how terrible of an experience we had with Glenn.
