What is Structural Cleaning and Decontamination?

Structural cleaning and decontamination is a critical part of the restoration process following fire, smoke, or water damage. It’s not just about restoring appearances; it’s about protecting the health and safety of everyone who enters the space.

The Importance of Professional Structural Cleaning

Fires leave behind extensive damage, and proper restoration goes far beyond surface cleaning. Soot and smoke residues contain harmful chemicals and toxins that can seep into porous materials like drywall, wood, and insulation. If not removed properly, these contaminants can continue to pose health risks for years.

Additionally, water used during firefighting efforts often leads to secondary issues, such as mold and mildew growth, which can worsen over time. This is why professional structural cleaning and decontamination in Raleigh, NC, is essential. Our certified team has the experience and specialized training to tackle even the most challenging post-fire situations.

Our Structural Cleaning and Decontamination Process in Raleigh, NC

When you trust our team for structural cleaning and decontamination in Raleigh, NC, we follow a systematic and thorough approach to restore your property to a safe, healthy state. Here’s how we do it:

1. Initial Assessment and Inspection

We begin by evaluating the extent of the damage. Our team conducts a thorough inspection to identify areas affected by fire, smoke, and water. This helps us create a customized restoration plan tailored to your property’s unique needs.

2. Safety First

Before starting any work, we ensure the safety of your property by addressing structural concerns such as weak beams, exposed wiring, or gas leaks. We also provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for our team and ensure the property is safe for all occupants.

3. Structural Cleaning and Decontamination

Our certified technicians use advanced equipment and techniques to remove soot, smoke, and harmful residues from all affected surfaces. This includes:

  • Walls and Ceilings: Porous surfaces like drywall and ceilings absorb contaminants. We use specialized cleaning agents that break down stubborn soot and smoke particles, followed by careful wiping and rinsing to remove any lingering traces.
  • Permanent Fixtures: Fixtures such as cabinetry, countertops, and appliances often absorb smoke residues. We clean and sanitize these surfaces to ensure they are free of harmful contaminants and restored to their original condition.

4. Deodorization

Smoke odors can linger long after the fire is extinguished. We use advanced deodorization techniques, such as ozone machines and thermal fogging, to neutralize residual odors. This ensures your property smells fresh and clean.

5. Final Inspection

After cleaning and deodorization, we perform a final inspection to ensure all areas have been thoroughly cleaned and decontaminated. Our goal is to restore your property to a safe, pre-loss condition.

If you’re looking for a company like PuroClean, chances are you’re in the middle of a very stressful experience and you’re looking for a seasoned professional that you can trust to guide you through the process and get your home and your life back on track. That’s what we needed, and Glenn seemed to suit our needs. But while he initially presented himself as eager to help and willing to guide us every step of the way, once we were in the thick of it and at his mercy, we experienced broken promises, and a sudden hostile personality change. From literally saying the words, “I’m here to explain it all to you, if you have the same question ten times that just means it’s important and you need to understand”... to... “I can’t keep going over this with you, if you don’t sign I’m going to have my crew leave immediately”— all because I asked him to explain what effect the form had on the work they would do that day. His crew confirmed there would be no difference, they would be completing a peroxide spray down of the crawl space whether we were waiving post clearance testing, or not. Glenn also told me that when our dry-out was complete, he could have his floor guy to us immediately and without delay. I stressed this to him more than once, because I know how busy contractors are these days and I was trying to keep things moving. He told me his guy would come immediately. Then I asked about how this contractor would be paid, and he said, “I pay my guys, and then when your insurance check comes, you pay me.” But suddenly, the day before the flooring guy is due to come out, I get mixed messages and ignored (first, a text stating we would need to pay in full; then, a conversation in which he blamed Siri for the misinformation and stated we would just need to pay the deductible (which we had explained several times that we had already satisfied); and then, promises to look into it and get back to me by the end of the day which he did not do). Along the way he made several small promises (ie to check in with the air quality testing company to see if our report could be expedited, to check in by text daily about progress, to return a call “after my conference call” which he never did, only responding a day later upon my follow up.) Ultimately, with about twelve hours until his floor guy was due to show up, he finally answered by text to say that PuroClean would no longer be able to help with repairs as they were “too busy”. When I reminded him he said all along that the very guy he was sending was to be his subcontractor, he admitted his lie. At that point, we had (THANK GOODNESS!) already hired a different floor contractor to come. Now, the good. The techs are great. Wayne, especially, went above and beyond to answer all of my questions and concerns, and never seemed annoyed by my desire to understand. He even told me he worried that him/his crew may have damaged by dryer, since there was a dent on top. A photo I had taken prior to the start of work showed it was pre-existing, but I was so heartened by his honesty even when it may have been a liability to himself. He was great, a real asset to the company. It’s too bad they couldn’t have someone like him on the customer service end of things. That said, Wayne was the only positive part of the experience with PuroClean, and unfortunately, that was not enough to overcome how terrible of an experience we had with Glenn.
