As temperatures rise in North Carolina with the arrival of summer, it’s important to remember that we aren’t the only ones feeling the heat. Our pets, sometimes spending more time outside then we do, can be overwhelmed by the summer too. That’s why we’re sharing some expert-backed tips with you to help keep your pets safe and cool all summer long.
Here are 7 essential pet safety tips to follow this season:
1. Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can skyrocket in just minutes—especially in humid North Carolina summers. On an 85°F day, the interior of a car can reach over 100°F in just 10 minutes. Every year, emergency responders in our state rescue pets left in vehicles. Unfortunately, some don’t make it. When in doubt, keep your pets safe and at home where it’s cool and safe.

2. Keep Your Home Safe and Cool
In North Carolina, power outages from summer storms can leave homes without air conditioning for hours or even days. Make sure your emergency plan to keep your pets safe. Keep extra water, portable fans, and cooling pads available. If you experience flooding or fire damage, PuroClean is always ready to respond quickly to help restore your home and protect your pets’ environment.
3. Be Mindful of Hot Pavement
If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Asphalt and concrete can exceed 130°F on sunny days, leading to painful burns or even permanent damage. Walk your dog during the early morning or evening hours and stick to grassy areas whenever possible.
- If a walk is needed during peak hours, consider pet shoes.

4. Hydration is Critical
Pets can get dehydrated fast in the summer. Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water. When outdoors, bring a portable water dish and offer water frequently. Add ice cubes to your pet’s water bowl on especially hot days for an extra cooling effect.
5. Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen and Insect Repellent
Yes—pets can get sunburned too, especially those with light skin or thin coats. Use only veterinarian-approved sunscreen on exposed areas. Avoid products with zinc oxide or PABA, which are toxic to animals. Likewise, protect against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes with vet-recommended bug sprays.
6. Provide Shade and Proper Ventilation
If your pet spends time outdoors, make sure there’s plenty of shade and airflow. Dog houses in sun can trap heat and make temperatures even worse, so keep those in the shade too.
7. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that can happen fast. Signs include:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Weakness or confusion
- Vomiting
- Bright red or pale gums
If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and call your vet or an emergency clinic right away.
