Bathroom Exhaust Tips for Mold Prevention

Why is the Bathroom Exhaust so Important?

It’s the most moist room in your home.

In this blog, we will discuss mold prevention tips for your bathroom exhaust. The reason we are focusing on the bathroom is because it is constantly wet. Water is not only present on surfaces such as your sink, bathtub, and tiles, it also invades the air in the form of extreme humidity.

We often receive calls from concerned homeowners asking about tips for recurring bathroom mold. The answer is usually very simple. You absolutely MUST run your bathroom vent as you take your shower, and keep it going for about 10 minutes after you are done. This habit should be practiced by all the members of your household.

How Do I Make Sure My Bathroom Exhaust Works Correctly?

Check Where it Leads

In our years of experience, we have seen our share of botched construction jobs. In terms of bathrooms, sometimes you might find that your exhaust releases the hot moist air directly into your attic instead of through your roof and outside. This, of course, is a recipe for disaster- while the exhaust is making the air in your bathroom nice and dry, it simultaneously makes the air in your attic extremely wet and will cause extensive mold.

Another common installation mistake is putting the exit of your exhaust system under the eaves of your roof, or your soffit. This area is prone to gusts of wind, which causes the moisture to be blown back inside the building.

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute)

Make sure that your fan is able to handle the amount of moisture present in your bathroom. This is where CFM comes in- it takes into account the size of the bathroom and the fixtures you use to determine how powerful your fan should be. The rule of thumb is 1 cfm per 1 square foot for bathrooms smaller or equal to 100 square feet.
