Recently, our PuroClean of Central Denver team was called to a property where a pipe between the laundry room and bathroom had burst, causing Category 3 water damage due to the presence of mold.
The water spread quickly across multiple areas of the home:
- Laundry Room: The hard flooring, baseboards, lower cabinets, drywall, and insulation were all affected.
- Half Bathroom: The flooring and drywall were saturated, requiring removal of the sink and toilet to properly dry and disinfect the area.
- Bedroom and Closet: The carpet and pad were soaked, with drywall and insulation showing early signs of mold.
- Garage and Basement: Water migrated into the ceiling, damaging drywall and insulation.
Category 3 losses like this require immediate attention since the water is considered highly contaminated, often containing bacteria, mold spores, or organic matter that can pose health risks if not remediated properly.
The Restoration Process
Our certified technicians followed IICRC industry standards to restore the property safely and effectively.
- Inspection and Containment:
We began with a detailed inspection and created containment barriers in affected rooms and the garage to prevent cross-contamination. - Demolition and Removal:
All unsalvageable materials, including hard flooring, baseboards, lower cabinets, drywall, and insulation, were removed. We performed flood cuts two feet above the damage line to ensure no hidden moisture or mold remained behind the walls. - Mold and Odor Treatment:
After demolition, we applied antimicrobial solutions, used HEPA vacuums to capture microscopic particles, and set up air scrubbers and dehumidifiers to restore air quality. - Drying and Equipment Setup:
Multiple air movers, dehumidifiers, heaters, and air filtration devices (AFDs) were strategically placed throughout the laundry room, bathroom, bedroom, stairway, and garage to ensure proper structural drying. - Safety First:
Our team used personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the process and followed strict protocols for cleanup and waste disposal.
By the end of the project, the property was completely dry, sanitized, and ready for reconstruction. The homeowner was relieved to know that not only had the visible damage been addressed, but that mold growth and air quality hazards were completely mitigated.
