“For me, content work isn’t just about packing and moving things—it’s about protecting what matters most to our customers,” said Esmeralda. “Every (personal property) item has a story, and my job is to make sure it’s cared for so that when it’s returned, it feels like home again.”
After a large disaster, your home is not the only thing that needs restoration—your personal belongings do too. We’re excited to introduce you to Esmeralda Rios, our Content Supervisor at PuroClean of Central Southwest Houston. In this video interview, Esmeralda shares her expertise on what we call in the industry “Contents and Pack Out,” explaining how our team meticulously handles the moving, restoring, and secure storing of your personal property so you can focus on getting your life back to normal.
Why Personal Property Protection Comes First
“Valuables that might have been affected need to be moved immediately—not just to clear the way for repairs, but to be assessed, cleaned, and stored,” she said. PuroClean of Central Southwest Houston recommends moving the items as the mitigation process is often messy, with dust, chemicals, and debris flying everywhere, the homeowner is better off not risking ruining their items before more damage occurs.
Esmeralda explained that her team is 9/10 times the first to arrive after a fire incident or natural disaster because, typically, the mitigation side of PuroClean begins immediately after notification of the incident. Check out our article on Water Mitigation to learn more about this essential step in the restoration process.
After mitigation, Reconstruction often takes place, meaning that the items have to be stored in a secure place for even longer. That’s why our temperature controlled warehouse is the most reliable place to keep all of your items together during all of these transitions.
Whether it’s furniture, clothing, electronics, or heirlooms, each piece of personal property is handled with professional precision to prevent further damage, ensure the items don’t get misplaced, and provide accurate insurance documentation.
Step 1: Inspection and Planning
Most packout jobs, which involve moving contents from a damaged structure for restoration or repairs, begin with an email from Contents Manager Jacob or Operations Manager Mike.
“I review the details, look up the address, and add any special notes the crew will need,” Esmeralda explained. “Then I schedule an in-person inspection, which becomes the blueprint for the job.
Inspections determine:
- The number of crew members required
- The types and quantities of packing materials needed
- Special handling for fragile or high-value personal property
Step 2: The Packout Process
On the day of the job, Esmeralda begins with a morning huddle to ensure her crew is fully prepared.
“I hand out documents with box codes, signature sheets, and counts for mats—making sure everyone knows the game plan before we start,” she said.
During the pack out, the crew:
- Wraps large furniture in protective fabric and plastic sheeting
- Packs smaller personal property items—such as kitchenware, office supplies, and clothing—into labeled moving boxes
- Documents every item for tracking and insurance purposes

Step 3: Storage and Documentation
Once items are packed, they’re transported to PuroClean of Central Southwest Houston’s secure storage facility.
“We label and code every piece of personal property so it’s easy to locate later,” Esmeralda noted. “We also take detailed photos and notes for the insurance carrier.”
PuroClean’s estimator carefully reviews the full inventory—counting every item, box, and piece of furniture—and evaluates any cleaning or restoration needs. This detailed assessment enables the team to provide an accurate estimate that aids the insurance provider’s process.

Step 4: The Pack Back
Once the home is fully repaired and ready for pack back, we begin returning all cleaned, restored, and documented belongings to their original places.
“This is my favorite part,” she shared. “We return every item, cleaned and restored, to its exact spot in the home. Seeing the relief on a homeowner’s face makes everything we do worth it.”
Why Professional Packouts Matter
Esmeralda believes that protecting personal property is about much more than moving boxes.
“We give homeowners peace of mind,” she said. “They know their belongings are safe, documented, and ready to come home when they are.”
Professional pack out services can:
- Speed up insurance claims
- Reduce the risk of further damage
- Ensure secure, organized storage
