PuroClean of Central Southwest Houston’s Marketing Department has partnered with our Water Mitigation Department to bring you a comprehensive video outlining our entire Water Mitigation Process.

Common Water Emergencies

Water damage often strikes without warning, and our team sees certain causes again and again. Some of the most frequent include:

water damage and mold

● Leaking or ruptured water heaters
● Burst supply lines under sinks or behind toilets
● Condensate leaks from A/C units during Houston’s hot summers
● Hidden pipe leaks inside walls
● Appliance malfunctions such as dishwashers or washing machines
● Indoor flooding from sprinklers or irrigation systems

If you’re dealing with a plumbing issue, our team can guide you over the phone to help determine the right next steps. For fast and professional service, we recommend our sister company, 1-Tom-Plumber, who can respond quickly to all your plumbing needs

Before We Begin

Our Admin team will ask a few questions to collect key information such as:
1) When did the incident happen?
2) What caused it?
3) Have you been able to contain the water (for example, by shutting off the main water
line)?
4) Have you already filed an insurance claim?

This is important because, in some cases, your water issue may need to be handled by a plumber before mitigation can begin. Our water mitigation process starts after the customer has filed an insurance claim and signed a Work Authorization document, which allows us to legally start working on your property.

Free Assessment for Water Jobs

At PuroClean of Central Southwest Houston, we believe that quick action and clear
communication make all the difference during a water emergency. That’s why we offer a free
in-person water mitigation assessment to help homeowners understand their situation and their options
before work begins.

During this visit we:

● Determine if the Contents need to be moved or stored in a separate location (such as our Warehouse)
See “Saving What Matters Most: How PuroClean Protects Your Personal Property” for a breakdown of the Contents Services Department.
● Record a detailed loss description, address, and rooms affected
● Evaluate whether reconstruction may be needed
● Take moisture readings and initial photos
● Capture 3D scans of affected areas using DocuSketch

This thorough documentation protects your insurance claim and ensures nothing is overlooked
during restoration.

Identifying the Water Source & Category

Every successful water mitigation project starts with knowing what we’re dealing with. Our
certified specialists trace the water’s path through your property and determine the category:

Category 1: Clean water (burst supply line, water heater leak)
Category 2: Grey water (washing machine overflow, standing water up to 48 hours)
Category 3: Contaminated water (sewage, floodwater)

Each category requires different safety measures and cleaning procedures, and our team knows
exactly how to handle them.

Inspection & Work Plan

After identifying the source and category, we perform a full visual inspection and map out a
preliminary course of action. We decide which materials and contents can be salvaged and
which must be removed—always aiming to restore rather than replace to save you money and
protect your belongings.

Communication with Insurance

Dealing with insurance is often the most stressful part of water damage. PuroClean handles that
for you. Before removing cabinets, flooring, or other structural materials, we share our findings
with your insurer and obtain approvals so you’re never surprised by unexpected costs.

Demolition & Professional Drying

With approvals in place, our technicians carry out any necessary demolition, removing only
unsalvageable materials. We then set up specialized drying equipment—air movers,
dehumidifiers, and moisture-monitoring tools—to stabilize your structure, prevent mold, and
ensure a healthy indoor environment.

We also take a second DocuSketch scan after demolition to help our estimators create an
accurate and efficient repair plan. If reconstruction is needed, we’ll handle ordering flooring,
cabinets, and other materials while coordinating directly with your insurance adjuster for
approvals.

Why Documentation and Technology Matter

Every photo, moisture reading, and 3D scan we collect isn’t just for records—it’s to give homeowners peace of mind and to ensure full transparency with their insurance carrier. Because water mitigation is often an emergency service tied to insurance claims, PuroClean typically receives payment after the work has been completed, once the documentation has been reviewed and approved. Our use of advanced tools and industry best practices keeps the process professional, compliant, and stress-free for the customer. Later, we use this documentation to create detailed estimates in Xactimate, the insurance-approved estimating software. (We’ll cover that in more detail in a separate article and video.)
